Milford to rebuild Eisenhower park bridge
By FRANK JULIANO Staff writer Article Last Updated: 11/09/2008 08:51:43 PM EST MILFORD -- Call it the "Bridge to Somewhere." The city will rebuild a bridge in Eisenhower Park that left the sprawling park cut in half since it washed out in the 1982 flood. The Board of Aldermen agreed last week to accept $341,000 earmarked for the project by U.S. Rep. Rosa L. DeLauro, D-3, and U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman. The board also approved a requirement suggested by Alderwoman Jessica Blacketter, D-4, that the final plans come back for approval. Improvements to Eisenhower Park have been under discussion for several years and a study committee's proposals to phase in amenities such as a splash park have been controversial. "My concern is that there is a lot of interest in what happens with the park, and I see some vagueness in the numbers,'' Blacketter said. "It's the 'to-be-determined' part of the grant that people want input on.'' Mayor James L. Richetelli Jr. said that three-fourths of the money will be used to replace the washed-out bridge with one sturdy enough to allow public works vehicles to use it. The rest would go for landscaping. The deadline for accepting the money is Dec. 31, the mayor said, and much work needs to be done first, including drawing up construction plans. If Blacketter's requirement causes the city to miss the deadline, "You might as well kiss the grant good-bye.'' Marcia Winter, the city's grant writer, said the original request was for $540,000 and was made in 2005. Mark Lofthouse, chairman of the Eisenhower Park study committee, said users of the 330-acre park are cut off from each other; the dog run, model airplane club and other areas on the West River Street side can't be accessed from the North Street entrance of the park. "Right now people are walking into the river to cross, over slippery rocks. It's a liability, an accident waiting to happen,'' Lofthouse said.
