Gas drilling to test state land
If exploratory drilling on state trust lands in Mora and Colfax counties locates good potential for recovering methane gas from the ground, it likely will lead to industry development in those counties that will include "lots of jobs," according to the owner of a company that successfully bid last week for drilling leases on the properties. Knute H. Lee Jr., owner of KHL, Inc. in Albuquerque, said "many separate efforts" have been carried out in the past to "figure out the geology" of the area east of Ocate in Mora County and continuing on to adjoining land in the southeast corner of Colfax County. Although those efforts have not been successful in finding a productive way to use standard vertical-drilling wells amid the structure of the earth there, Lee said, the gas and oil industry's continued attempts to find an efficient way to tap into the minerals beneath the surface indicate the area likely has some good supplies.

We can now breathe easier..." - L. Braun
