Lawsuit targets county, airport operator
Saratoga County and North American Flight Services, the company that operates Saratoga County Airport, are being sued for $2 million for failing to properly clear trees from the flight path of planes landing on the airport's runway five. The suit stems from a July 13, 2008, accident during which a lear jet owned by Jet Plaid LLC struck several trees while landing at the airport and was severely damaged. No one was injured in the accident. The accident resulted in sanctions from the Federal Aviation Administration as well as the removal of the tall trees in the backyards of homes adjacent to the Milton airport. One homeowner has refused to allow the county to remove the trees from his yard, and the county is in the process of using eminent domain to gain access to the trees.

Marsicano likes finish
Trevor Marsicano made sure to stick around and congratulate Shani Davis and Chad Hedrick, but he felt pretty pleased, too. Marsicano took 10th place in the 1,000 meters at the Richmond Olympic Oval on Wednesday, an event he won at last year's world championships held at the same venue. Teammate Davis took the gold this time and another American, Hedrick, won bronze as all four Americans placed in the top 10. South Korean Mo Tae-Bum added a silver to his 500-meter gold. Marsicano's time, 1:10.11, wasn't near his bests from this season or last, but the 20-year-old from Ballston Spa has been adamant that his first Olympics shouldn't be judged by his results. He's here for the experience. "I'm very happy with that because that is the best I've looked and felt all season long," said Marsicano, who has had only one top 10 in four World Cup races in the 1,000 this year.

Eyes turn to STEP center
Several area businesses and a local attorney have expressed interest in being part of a new "lifestyle" center envisioned for the Saratoga Technology + Energy Park in Malta. The new center, if built, would provide retail services to the growing number of workers at the park, which sits within the Luther Forest Technology Campus where GlobalFoundries Inc. is building a $4.2 billion computer chip factory. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, which runs STEP to foster companies involved in the energy and high-tech centers, started seeking development proposals last year. The authority posted a list of "interested parties" on its Web site. Meanwhile, GlobalFoundries is growing its presence at 107 Hermes, which is the main STEP office building. GlobalFoundries spokesman Travis Bullard said last week the company has hired 30 people and had to expand its office space from 9,000 square feet to roughly 25,000 square feet. The computer chip manufacturer, which is based in Sunnyvale, Calif., now occupies space on two floors.

Family finds goat milk good for more than just cheese
The Mayes family are big fans of goat milk, but not necessarily to eat or cook with-they wash and moisturize with it. The family lives on a farm in Mechanicville where they have been making goat milk soap and lotion in their basement for 10 years. What started as a small family business has grown to become a much larger enterprise, still family-run, that now services 50 states and 30 countries. Maryclaire Mayes homeschooled her children and made soap out of goat milk for a science experiment. When the family started using it, Mayes said it was wonderful and she kept making it for home use and to give away as gifts. At her husband's urging, Mayes researched how to become a small business and things took off. "Because I was homeschooling my kids I was always putting the brakes on things. I didn't want to be big. Then they went away to school and we've been growing steadily ever since," said Mayes. "I made the soap myself up until two years ago when my son came home from college and took over; I made 85 bars a batch but he invented a system that mechanically helps lift the heavy pots and can make batches of 320." Mayes said besides being a unique product locally, nationally and globally, she thinks what really makes the company, Alabu Inc., stand out is that it uses 100 percent goat milk.
