Afghan tribal leader set for trial in NYC
By his own account, former Afghan tribal leader Bashir Noorzai resisted the Soviet Union's invasion of his country three decades ago. But when U.S. forces showed up following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, he put down his arms. 'Afghanistan is in anarchy,' the one-time Taliban ally recalls telling his tribesmen. 'Americans are establishing our future government.' Rather than thank him, Noorzai claims the U.S. government betrayed him: In 2005, he was branded a most-wanted drug kingpin, lured to New York and arrested.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton marched for labor and stumped with Democrats on Saturday, but sidestepped questions about the woman who has taken her place as the nation's most-talked-about female leader. Clinton brushed aside questions about Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin during appearances at New York City's annual Labor Day parade and later during a stop on Staten Island. 'This election is about issues, and that's what's going to matter to people at the end of the day,' she told reporters who asked her about the Alaska governor at a rally for a Democratic congressional candidate at Wagner College.

Once wilderness amid bustle, NYC rail becomes park
Joshua David remembers vividly the first time he stepped out onto the rusted-over elevated railway track that snaked above Manhattan. 'It was this incredible, hidden landscape that was invisible from the street that just stretched for blocks and blocks and blocks _ as far as you could see,' he recalls. 'All these grasses and wildflowers and trees, hidden like a secret garden in the middle of the city. And it just made your heart rise.' There was no public access to the shock of green above the rusty underbelly of the High Line railway. With wrecking balls looming, David helped lead a campaign to turn the abandoned track, winding through a desolate corner of the city, into a public park.
