11/30/2008 12/30/2008 Havre de Grace MD HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. -- James Curtis Burris of Havre de Grace, Md. and Edgartown, Mass., died at home on Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008, after a long battle with cancers related to Agent Orange. Mr. Burris resided in Mendham for 20 years and was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church and the Spring Brook Country Club. The son of Hazel Marriott and John Cecil (Skeet) Burris, Jim was born in Tulsa, Okla., and chronicled his experiences from the dust bowl and depression in a book to be completed by his wife, Marge. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1954. He received a master's degree in psychology from Louisiana State University and graduated from the Army's Command and Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. Decorated for valor in infantry combat, Lt. Col. Burris was awarded three Silver Stars, two Legions of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, two Bronze Star medals for valor, 39 Air Medals for combat assaults in Vietnam, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal and various awards and decorations from Allied Nations. He also earned the Ranger Tab and Master Parachutist's Badge. Following retirement from the Militarym he was an executive at BASF North America, Parsippany, for 13 years retiring to start his own consulting firm. He later joined Boyden International Inc. in Morristown, as executive vice president. His career was cut short as a result of illness. During his military and private-sector careers Jim Burris was sought as a mentor, coach and confidant, and was appreciated for his candor, wisdom and counsel by the many who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, the former Margaret Contessa; and his four daughters Elizabeth Harwood and Martha Christy Berry of Chattanooga, Tenn., Cecilia Porter of Cummings, Ga., and Sarah Stone of Charleston, S.C.; nine grandchildren; and his brother, Robert and family of Aurora, Colo. His marriage to Marion Grandy ended in divorce. A memorial service will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Owings Mills, Md., on Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 11 a.m. A funeral service and burial with full military honors will take place at Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, his family requests contributions in his memory be made to either the West Point Class of 1954 Fund, www.WestPointAOG.org ( WP Fund, West Point AOG, 698 Mills Road, West Point, N.Y. 10996), or to Wounded Warriors Family Support, 10730 Pacific St., Suite 10, Omaha, Neb. 68114.
