Construction Delayed at Beaver Boat Launch

    AN EXCAVATOR WAS TRAPPED IN MUD at the Beaver Boat Launch in Clatskanie during the construction of the boat launch improvements on Tuesday, Aug. 12.

    With the tide out, crew members of the RC Landworks, Inc. of Damascas, were digging in a mud hole when the excavator suddenly started to sink. As the tide came in, the piece of machinery became stuck in the mud. A replacement excavator was coming from Portland and a tow truck was scheduled to pull out the damaged excavator at low tide around 7 p.m. Tuesday.

    About a dozen downtown Clatskanie property owners, plus several other interested persons met Monday evening, Aug. 4, with Louise Solliday, director of the Oregon Department of State Lands (DSL); State Senator Betsy Johnson, State Representative Brad Witt, and Columbia County Commission Chair Tony Hyde.

    Discussion at the meeting was on the topic of the DSL's demands that the owners of six downtown properties - plus the city of Clatskanie - pay leases on property that is part of the Isaac Waggoner and E.S. Bryant Donation Land Claims (DLC).
