New Castle man admits he caused 2006 house explosion
NEW CASTLE, Lawrence County-- The Lawrence County man accused of setting off an explosion that tore through New Castle's East Side 2006 copped to a plea bargain in court on Monday. The judge in the case accepted 31-year old William Patrick Henry's guilty plea to one count of arson on the same day jury selection was scheduled to begin for his trial. Henry admitted he disconnected a gas line inside his rental home on Franklin Avenue which then exploded destroying houses next door and injuring Henry and two other people. The blast also damaged homes for several blocks with damage reaching well beyond a million dollars. Henry will face sentencing in early 2009 with a possible prison sentence of 7-10 years. He was also ordered to pay $1.3 million dollars in restitution. Henry's plea deal meant the court and Lawrence County District Attorney agreed to drop more than 100 charges originally filed against him including causing a catastrophe for the blast that rocked his neighborhood. Investigators say Henry rigged his house to explode in a suicide attempt.
