HOHENWALD - Opponents to a proposed landfill are accusing their county mayor of betraying his constituents by offering to sell land to two Mt. Pleasant aluminum companies looking for a place to dispose of their waste. "The mayor let us down," said Leon Hunter, who is the second longest serving Lewis County commissioner. "He sold us out. ... I guess money talks more than the people's health." Meanwhile, the city of Hohenwald is threatening to file legal action to stop the landfill, a sign that environmental concerns originating in Maury County have spread to neighboring Lewis. Smelter Service Corp. and Tennessee Aluminum Processors Inc. filed for an environmental permit to put a landfill on property on Duchess Lane south of Hohenwald owned by Lewis County Mayor Kenneth R. Turnbow, according to a notice issued this week.
