LOCAL FRESH SUMMER PRODUCE GONE FOR THE YEAR
With recent killing frost in the county, farmers are selling the last of their tomatoes and other summer produce are gone for the year. Some farmers may still have some to sell if you stop by their farms in the next few days. Fresh tomatoes will last longer when washed in a mixture of ten percent bleach to kill bacteria (one cup of household bleach in a gallon of water) after washing dry off tomatoes and wrap in clean newspaper. Store in a cool dark place. Green tomatoes will slowly ripen and last till after Thanksgiving. Many farmers also have winter squash advailable that stores easily in cool places, just as potatoes do. If stored potatoes start to swivel up from dehydration, soak them in water for a few hours before peeling to firm them back up. Apples also still advailable for a few more weeks on the mountian.
