Traveling Back Through the Door County Advocate Files
10 Years Ago Sept. 15-18, 1998 Tony Kiszonnas, 40, a Biology teacher at Southern Door High School for the past 18 years, is one of 10 finalists for the 1998 National Football League Teacher of the Year. The tornado that caused more than $6.5 million in damage near Egg Harbor last month tested but did not overwhelm Door County's ability to handle a major disaster. The conclusion came when local officials met to critique how their plans and departments functioned when the storm hit. Palmer Johnson Inc., the Sturgeon Bay builder of luxury yachts, will claim the spotlight in world yachting circles Thursday when it unveils its crowning achievement, the 195-foot yacht, La Baronessa. The state Department of Natural Resources proposed to give the town $460,000 as part of a 20-year plan. The Sturgeon Bay Police Department has a weapon on the war against crime. The department unveiled two new battery-powered bicycles to be used for selected patrols and also used by the Sheriff's Department for special events. Beyer, Oct. 10. 25 Years Ago Sept. 13-15, 1983 Sturgeon Bay city police responded to a 4:34 a.m. call at the Schultz's Family Store in the Cherry Point Mall, where they found Michael Turk, 29, stuck inside an 18-by-27-foot air conditioning duct After 35 years in business, Toni and Leo Henkel sold Leo's Tavern and Restaurant to Amy and Willie Schartner. An Illinois motorcyclist is the county's third fatality of the year. LaVern Truesdell, 40, Manteno, Ill., was found dead along Wisconsin 42 in the town of Gibraltar. The draw of the railway bridge and the draw of the adjacent highway bridge are not in line, making a navigational hazard. The problem was created in 1931, when the state constructed the highway bridge and failed to line up its draw with the draw of the railway bridge. Three people died in one of Door County's worst automobile accidents. The two-car crash on County X, east of Rosiere, on Sept. 14 claimed the lives of Janice Andre, 18, Forestville; Kenneth Grundhoeffer, 31, Casco; and Lois Halada, 15, Casco.
